Bears Survive Bucs

Tampa, FL – Walter Payton rushed for 138 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Bears to a 21-17 survival road win in Tampa.

Chicago (3-7) used a powerful run attack (46-223-3TDs) to control most of the game, but turnovers (a total of 4) continued to plague the Bears.

Payton tallied the only points in the 1st half with a 2-yard run at the 2:04 mark of the 1st period.
The Bears went up 14-0 in the 3rd quarter on a Matt Suhey 3-yard dive.

Tampa Bay (1-9) responded defensively when Joey Browner picked off Mike Tomczak and raced 27 yards for the score. It was 14-7 heading into the final frame.

The Buccaneers closed the gap on a Donald Igwebuike 30 yarder with 11:12 left. The Bears defensive responded by forcing one of its 3 turnovers. Wilbur Marshall sacked Steve Young (3 fumbles) forcing a fumble. Mike Singletary returned it 72 yards to the TB 2 where Payton rammed it home. 21-10 Bears with 9:46 left.

With the Bears trying to hold on and marching in Bucs territory, Jeremiah Castille punched the ball away from rookie Neal Anderson and Craig Curry took it 69 yards to the Bears 1. James Wilder smashed it in and the score was 21-17 with 2:26 remaining.

Bucs onside kick fails, but forced Chicago to punt into a touchback with 100 ticks left. Young would take the Bucs to the Bears 44 before a final desperation throw was batted down by Mike Richardson.

Bears Bit by Rams (and Dave Koch)

CHICAGO It’s official (in my mind anyway). Dave Koch (from Wisconsin) has rigged his game against the Chicago Bears. In reality the 1986 Bears went 14-2. The ARAIG version is now 2-7 after a 16-9 loss tothe Los Angeles Rams at Soldier Field.

Of course (tongue firmly planted in cheek here), the results of the game had nothing at all to do with the coaching of Jim Sindelar or the fact that the game was played at 2a.m. Poland time.

Still, the facts don’t line up with the results. The Bears topped the Rams (5-4) in the following statistics: Net Offense (373:244), First Downs (23:16), Possession Time (32:14-27:46), Third Down Eff. (4-14 : 2-12), Missed Tackles (1:13). And Walter Payton rushed for 181 yards. Neither team scored an offensive touchdown.

THE difference was a 43-yard fumble recovery return for a TD by Mel Owens at the 9:42 mark of the 2nd quarter. The LB scooped up the ball after Mike Wilcher had stripped the ball from Calvin Thomas.

Buffalo 14 Tampa Bay 28

Buffalo travels to Tampa in the rain.

Watching the weather report was probably more exciting than watching the Bills highlights. Other than 2 long passes for touchdowns, the game was dominated by Steve Young as the 0-8 Bucs post their first victory of the season.

Another great game by Gene. A great coach and sportsman. Thanks for the sub sir!

-Paul/Buffalo

Cleveland 34 Indy 17

Cleveland RB Curtis Dickey return from injury and ran for 133 yards on 21 carries and 2 TDs as the Browns defeated the Colts 34 to 17 in the Hoosier Dome.
Cleveland's Defense kept the Colt off the score board until the 4th quarter. Next week the Browns go home to play the Dolphins and the Colts go home to play the Patriots.
Thanks to John for coaching the Colts.

Detroit 34 Cincinnati 31

Cincinnati now knows whats its like playing in the Silver Dome as they fall to the Lions 34-31. Bengels rolled up 476 yards total offense, but commited 3 turnovers to zero for the Lions. A couple of drives were killed by holding penalities as they shot themselves in the foot. Next week Cincy travels to visit the Oilers, Lions host the Vikings. Joey had me outfoxed on most plays, but I would rather be lucky than good any day, as I was coached badly. Go figure

New York (A) 30 New Orleans 14

Ken O'Brien completed 22 of 33 passes for 315 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Jets over visiting New Orleans, 30-14.  MVP Al Toon caught 6 passes for 161 yards and 2 touchdowns, including a 79 yarder on the game's first play from scrimmage.  New York's much maligned defense intercepted 3 passes, forced a fumble, and blocked a punt.  Eric Martin was the only standout for the Saints, catching 4 passes for 55 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Next week, New York travels to Seattle to meet the undefeated Seahawks while New Orleans returns home to host the undefeated 49ers.
Al Toon's 2 touchdowns led NY over NO.

49ers 30 vs. Packers 0

Jeff Kemp subbing in for an injured Joe Montana leads the 49ers to a win versus the Green Bay Packers 30 -0. The 49ers utilized Joe Cribbs effectively. But the SF defense was the main factor as they stole 5 passes from GB quarterbacks (Wright/Ferragamo). to swing the balance. Roger Craig caught 7 passes in the effort.

Seattle 35 Denver 21

Broncos out gained the Seahawks 455 to 257 and were  up 14 - 0 and the end of the first, but then the wheels fell of; PR for a TD, Blocked punt, missed FG's and turnovers lead to 35 straight points for Seattle!  Karlis has only made 1 for his last 8 FG with many being chip shots.  Seattle take a commanding lead in the division with an 8- 0 record, while Denver falls to 4 - 4.

Washington 45 NY Giants 35

WASH 41- NYG 35
THE GIANTS GAINED AN INCREDIBLE 492 YARDS TO WASH 309. SIMMS WAS 25-40 FOR 347 YARDS. AFTER BEING HELD TO JUST 37 YARDS LAST WEEK MORRIS GAINED 138 YARDS ON 24 CARRIES.
HOWEVER, SIMMS THREW 4 INTERCEPTIONS, ONE OF WHICH WAS RETURNED FOR A TD.

THE GIANTS SCORED A TD THE FIRST TIME THEY HAD THE BALL. K. JENKINS THEN RETURNED THE SUBSEQUENT KICKOFF 74 YARDS. WASH SCORED SEVERAL PLAYS LATER. THE SECOND TIME THE GIANTS HAD THE BALL THEY AGAIN SCORED A TD. JENKINS THEN RETURNED THE KICKOFF 96 YARDS FOR A TD.
I REALIZE THIS IS A GAME BUT IN REAL LIFE JENKINS LONGEST KICKOFF RETURN WAS ONLY 37 YARDS
I STILL DO NO UNDERSTAND HOW THAT CAN HAPPEN

I WOULD LIKE TO COMPLEMENT WASH COACH D. MARTZ FOR CALLING A GREAT GAME. WASH WAS AN UNBELIEVABLE 6 FOR 6 ON 4TH DOWN CONVERSIONS

Lions Trip Up Bears on the Road

CHICAGO – Alvin Moore plunged in from 2 yards out with 1:59 left to lift the Lions to a 17-14 win against the host Bears.
Detroit (5-3) took advantage on the final drive off a Lew Barnes fumble on a punt return with 3:42 remaining. Big Rich Strenger fell on it on the Bears 27. A pass interference call on DB Reggie Phillips moved the ball to the 9. Three running plays later the Lions had the go ahead touchdown.
Chicago (2-6) tallied the only score in the first 30 minutes when Jim McMahon aired it out to Willie Gault on a 42-yard strike at the 8:30 mark of the 1st quarter. This came after the Bears were given new life when Keith Ferguson was whistled for offsides during a punt on 4th and 2.
The Lions tied it with 4:30 left in the 3rd when QB Eric Hipple (29-37-309-1 TD-1 Int) connected with WR Jeff Chadwick (11-138-1 TD) on a 9-yard scoring pass. They went ahead 10-7 at 9:59 of the 4th, following a massive 14-play, 84-yard drive which took 7:34 off the clock. Eddie Murray finished it with a 29-yard field goal.
The Bears responded on the ensuing drive, covering 80 yards and culminating with a 17-yard McMahon to Dennis Gentry scoring toss; 14-10 Chicago.
A Steve McMichael sack on Hipple forced Detroit to punt, but Barnes coughed it up.
The second half of the 1986 ARAIG season begins next week with the Lions hosting the Bengals and the Bears hosting the Rams.

Very fun black and blue division game against Gene.

Bengals Nip Oilers in One Remarkable Game

Cincinnati,

A game that did not cheat any fans in River Front, both the Oilers and Bengals dueled in a game that seemed to feature big and unexpected plays. However, it did not appear to be a great game at first as the Bengals got out to a quick 14-0 lead when Esiason hit Eddie Brown with touchdown passes of 33 and 25 yards.  The game remained that way for the first half. After 3 quarters of play, the Bengals held onto a 14-3 lead. Both teams had troubles. Houston could not convert on several 4th and shorts while the Bengals had back to back punts blocked and Jim Breech missed a short field goal. All hell broke loose in the fourth quarter as the Oilers came storming back with 21 unanswered points to take the lead. Mike Rozier busted in for a 2 yard touchdown with 37 ticks left on the clock which appeared to lock things up for the visiting Oilers.  Houston kicked off with a squib that gave the Bengals good field position at the Cincy 42.  After an incompletion over the middle to tight end Eric Kattus, Esiason hit Cris Collinsworth down the far sideline, and he out raced the Houston defense for 58 yards and a touchdown with 10 seconds left. The extra point was blocked.  Warren Moon hit Hill down the middle for 32 yards but time ran out. Final score...Bengals 27...Oilers 24.

O'Brien's 4 td's leads Jets to 38-14 win

O'Brien's 4 TD passes lead Jets to a win
Ken O'Brien threw for 271 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead the Jets to a 38-14 win over the Denver Broncos.  The key plays in the game occurred early in the 4th quarter after Denver has scored on an Elway to Jackson pass to pull within 28-14.  The Broncos stopped New York and had the ball on their own 19 when Johnny Lynn picked off an Elway pass and returned it 33 yards for a score.  Ken Bell then fumbled the ensuing kickoff at the Denver 36 which effectively put the game away.  Next week, New York hosts New Orleans while Denver returns home for a division game against Seattle.

San Francisco 28 Atlanta 13

49ers QB Joe Montana completed 21 of 29 passes for 120 yards and 2 TD as the 49ers defeated the Falcons in Fulton Stadium 28 - 13 and improve their record to 7 - 0.

Atlanta 23 LA Rams 16

In a divisional game that went down to the last play and last second, the Falcons hung on to defeat the Rams in Fulton County Stadium 23 - 16.
The Falcon Defense held Eric Dickerson to 21 yards rushing on 16 carries and returned a fumble 71 yards for a TD to give the Falcons the lead 17 - 16 at the start of the fourth quarter. With a 1:49 left in the game Falcon HB William Andrews broke a tackle on a dive play and ran 49 yards to score but the Xp point was blocked making the score 23 -16 and setting up the Rams to tie and send it into overtime.   Ram QBs Steve Brartkowski and Jim Evertt marched the Rams 64 yards in 8 plays in 1:43 to the Falcons 16 yardline. Then with no time on the clock Jim Everett's endzone pass to TE David Hill was Intercepted by LB Joel Williams to end the game. Next week the Falcons play the 1st place 49ers at home and the Rams go home to plat the Lions.

San Diego 17 Denver 14

In a classic Bronco-Charger matchup led by quarterbacks John Elway and Dan Fouts, this game came down to the wire.

Denver scored on their third possession of the game on a 11 yard pass from Elway to Steve Watson, and San Diego matched it when Fouts hit Wes Chandler on a 21 yard pass to tie the game. On Denver's next possession, kicker Rich Karlis missed a 23 yard chip shot, and the rest of the quarter was filled with punts.  The game was tied 7-7 at halftime

The Broncos started the second half with a long drive and took the lead on a 2 yard run by Sammy Winder for a 14-7 lead.  After each team punted, the Chargers went down the field and Fouts hit Kellen Winslow on a 12 yard  pass to tie the game at 14.  Neither team could move the ball much until San Diego got the ball with under two minutes left in the 4th quarter.

With Wes Chandler sidelined,  Fouts hit Lionel James for 11 yards, and Trumaine Johnson for 19.  Gary Anderson then took off for 19 and 7 yard runs to put the Chargers on the Bronco 20 yard line.  Rolf Benirschke is having an awful season, but with 3 seconds left he booted the game winning field goal to send the fans home happy.

This was a very close game that was a lot of fun.  Thanks Kurt.
