Minnesota Vikings 41 - Denver Broncos 24
The 1989 Super Bowl featuring the Minnesota Vikings against the Denver Broncos started out a little bit slow with Minnesota punting on their first two possessions and Denver failing to score on their first. On Denver's second possession, John Elway hit Vance Johnson on a long 33 yard slant over the middle to really get the action going. The Denver drive stalled at the Minnesota 19 yard line but Denver kicked a field goal to go up 3-0.
Mixing up the pass and the run, Minnesota got things going offensively on their third drive of the game going on a 12 play, 72 yard drive ending in a Hershel Walker 1 yard run to put the Vikings up 7-3. Denver kept things rolling on their next possession scoring on an Elway to Johnson 33 yard TD pass to put the Broncos up 10-7. After two quick three and outs by both teams, Minnesota went on another long scoring drive. This time it ended with 7 seconds left in the half on a Wade Wilson one yard QB sneak. The Vikings would lead 14-10. Disaster almost struck on the ensuing kickoff. The Broncos fumbled the squib kick giving the Vikings the ball with one second left in the half on the Denver 32 yard line. Luckily for the Broncos, Rich Karlis missed a 49 yard field goal to end the half. The Vikings would lead 14-10 at halftime.
Early in the second half is when the game really turned in the Vikings favor. The Broncos once again fumbled on the kickoff giving the Vikings the ball at the Broncos 14 yard line. Wade Wilson hit Anthony Carter on a 14 yard TD strike to put the Vikings up 21-10. On Denver's next possession, Joey Browner intercepted John Elway on the 3rd play of the drive giving the Vikings the ball at the Denver 23 yard line. Five plays later Hershel Walker scored once again on a two yard run to put the Vikings up 28-10. The teams traded possessions the remainder of the 3rd quarter without any scoring giving the Vikings a 28-10 lead going into the 4th.
The 4th quarter got a little crazy with Kurt really opening up the passing game with Elway attempting the comeback. The Vikings were the next team to score on another Wilson to Carter TD pass to put the Vikings up 35-10. It looked like the game might be over but Elway threw TD passes to Johnson and Sewell on Denver's next two possessions. The Vikings also mixed in a couple of Karlis field goals to score a total of 27 points by the two teams in the 4th. The Vikings win the 1989 Super Bowl 41-24 over the Broncos.
